Trump Serves Notice on NAFTA: The U.S. Won't Accept a Touchup
Aug. 16, 2017
University of Arizona Law’s David Gantz was interviewed by Bloomberg following the first day of talks between the U.S., Mexico and Canada to review the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Gantz is the Samuel M. Fegtly Professor of Law and director emeritus of the International Economic Law and Policy Program.
President Donald Trump has been vocal on his plans to revise the 23-year-old accord, and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer voiced the desire to win back the jobs and manufacturing capacity the U.S. has lost during NAFTA. Meanwhile, Mexico and Canada have taken less aggressive stances.
“If you’re really going to push for deficit reduction and discouraging American companies from investing in Mexico, those are both totally non-starters, so I don’t know how they work that out,” said Gantz of the negotiations. “I see this thing as something that is going to just slog along. It certainly won’t be done by the end of December.”
