Arizona Law Welcomes Director of Externships and Bar Success

Position was created to streamline externship opportunities for students

University of Arizona Law welcomes Amanda Bynum (’09) as the director of externships and bar success, a newly formed position in the Career Development Office (CDO).

Bynum will help students find externships and work with employers to create new opportunities. She will also be a resource in helping 3Ls prepare for the bar exam.

“We are excited to welcome an additional experienced practitioner to the Career Development Office team,” said Karen Kowalski, assistant dean for career development. “Under Amanda’s leadership, our externship program will allow students to gain practical experience and to enrich the environment of host organizations. Amanda and I look forward to working with the Arizona legal community to meaningfully connect interested organizations with student externs.”

The new position brings an added resource to CDO and will streamline the externship application process for students, who can now receive both pay and academic credit for an externship, due to a change in American Bar Association regulations.

“I was drawn to this position because of the opportunity to bring even more experiential learning opportunities to students,” said Bynum.

Prior to joining Arizona Law, Bynum worked as a criminal defense attorney in private and public practice and also led the college’s Criminal Defense Clinic for several semesters. She is a Tucson native and received both her undergraduate degree and her JD from the University of Arizona.

“As an alumna, I am excited to be part of such an amazing university, but more importantly part of the close community at Arizona Law, where we do everything we can to make sure our students find success,” said Bynum.
