Statement from the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association on Targeted Violence Against the Asian American Pacific Islander Community

 

 

 

APALSA stands in solidarity with our Asian American Pacific Islander community in condemning the targeted act of violence that occurred in Atlanta yesterday. The precious lives lost yesterday include six women of Asian descent. We are outraged and saddened by their murders. Their deaths are a tragic indication of anti-Asian sentiment that has worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

APALSA is committed to creating a safe, and inclusive environment for all marginalized students. Crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders spiked by 150% in major U.S. cities in 2020. In the past year, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders were targeted in close to 3,800 hate incidents. It is unfortunate that the recent spike in hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders is not more prevalent in major media outlets.
