Congressional Scholar Thomas Mann Joins Pitt Family Foundation Speaker Series
Mann will continue the speaker series on February 23.
New York Times best-selling author and scholar Thomas Mann will be the Pitt Family Foundation Speaker Series next guest speaker on Wednesday, February 23, 2022.
In a conversation with former Tucson mayor and current University of Arizona Law Professor of Practice Jonathan Rothschild, Mann will discuss the contentiousness rooted in long-term political trends, our coarsened political culture, and the impacts of new partisan media on creating America’s political dysfunction.
The Pitt Family Foundation Speaker Series is part of the Participatory Democracy Initiative at the University of Arizona. The Participatory Democracy Initiative is an interdisciplinary and community-engaged program of the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law, the School of Government & Public Policy, and the School of Journalism.

About Thomas Mann
Thomas E. Mann is a Senior Fellow in Governance Studies at The Brookings Institution and Resident Scholar, Institute of Governmental Studies, University of California, Berkeley. He held the W. Averell Harriman Chair at Brookings between 1991 and 2014 and was director of Governmental Studies between 1987 and 1999. Before that, Mann was executive director of the American Political Science Association.
Mann has taught at UC Berkeley, Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Virginia and American University; conducted polls for congressional candidates; worked as a consultant to IBM and the Public Broadcasting Service; chaired the Board of Overseers of the National Election Studies; and served as an expert witness in the constitutional defense of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law. He has lectured in the United States and abroad on American politics and public policy and contributed frequently to newspapers, blogs, and television and radio programs on politics and governance.
Mann published "The Broken Branch: How Congress is Failing America and How to Get It Back on Track" in partnership with Norm Ornstein. Following this publication they co-wrote the New York Times bestseller entitled "It's Even Worse Than It Looks: How the American Constitutional System Collided With the New Politics of Extremism." Mann and Ornstein have been named among 100 Top Global Thinkers by Foreign Policy Magazine for "diagnosing America's political dysfunction.”
