Application Deadlines

Applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. Given the small size of the program and its unique attributes, admission is highly competitive and early applications are strongly encouraged.

The admissions committee evaluates many factors, including, but not limited to:

• Your educational and professional experiences
• Grade trends
• Graduate study
• Extracurricular activities
• Substantial community service
• Socioeconomic background
• Personal challenges

Admissions Requirements

Eligibility

All LLM candidates must have earned a first law degree from either a foreign law school approved by the government or other accrediting authority in the nation in which it is located, or an ABA-approved law school in the United States, as applicable.

Students without a prior law degree should consider the University of Arizona Law’s Master of Legal Studies degree.

English Requirements

If English is not your first language, you must meet the minimum English language proficiency requirement which is a 79 TOEFL, composite 7.0 IELTS (with no subject area below 6.0), or 110 CEPT.

Students who wish to enroll in advanced courses that are co-offered through our JD program must demonstrate a higher English proficiency. The minimum requirements are 100 TOEFL, 7.5 IELTS, or 135 CEPT. 

The admissions committee reserves the right to request additional information, such as a personal interview or independent confirmation of prior degrees, depending on individual considerations.

We do not accept Duolingo scores. 

Conditional Admission
Applicants are occasionally admitted conditionally, subject to specified conditions such as completion of the UA Center for English as a Second Language Graduate University Track Pathway, or a new TOEFL, IELTS, or CEPT score prior to the start of the semester. Conditional admission is generally only offered to students who show great promise but who are just short of meeting our full admission requirements. Students who, for example, need extensive English training to meet our language proficiency should wait to submit their application until they have improved their English.

In-resident and Online applications may be submitted directly to University of Arizona Law through our website. You will create an account in order to begin the application, and then choose the degree program you're interested in.

Be sure to select the appropriate campus:

• For in-person studies, select: “Main”
• For fully online studies, select: “Online”

Apply through the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC)

In-residence and Arizona Online applications may also be submitted through the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC).

1. Create an LSAC LLM Student Account at lsac.org/llm.
2. Click on My School List, then School Search, then Add Member Schools. Select “The University of Arizona James E Rogers College of Law” and then click on Save Selections to School List.
3. Go to Start/Continue Application, click on the appropriate starting semester (Spring or Fall) and fill in the application
4. Click APPLY

Required LLM Application Materials

Official University Transcripts
Transcripts for your first law degree and any other post-secondary degrees should be submitted through LSAC’s Credential Assembly Service. (Please note that LSAC charges fees for services through the Credential Assembly Service Report.) If you apply directly through our website, you may upload a copy of your transcript. However, you will be required to submit to us an original hard copy transcript before the start of classes.
 
Resume
The resume should summarize your education, work experience, any publications, and other relevant credentials and accomplishments.
 
Personal Statement
The personal statement is both a writing sample and an opportunity to discuss your unique characteristics and personal qualities, including educational and work experiences, talents and special interests, socioeconomic background, involvement in community affairs and public service, or any events or circumstances that have helped shape your life or given it direction. It should not exceed three double-spaced pages in length.
 
Two or More Letters of Recommendation
All letters of recommendation must be submitted on official letterhead.

At least one letter of recommendation should be from a faculty member at the institution awarding your first law degree. If not, please explain why this is not available in the appropriate departmental question on the application. Applicants who hold an LLM degree must submit at least one recommendation from an instructor at the institution that granted their LLM degree.

The strongest recommendations are substantive and detail your analytical abilities and writing skills. It is worth making a significant effort to communicate with your recommenders regarding the need for detail.
 
English Proficiency Report
Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, or CEPT) is one of the conditions for admission for all applicants whose native language is not English, and who do not qualify for a waiver. We do not accept Duolingo scores.
